Venice Fun Ride raises $74,000 for local charities

VENICE, Fla. (WWSB) — Cyclists across the Venice area put their sweat to good use this weekend.

The Venice Yacht Club Foundation held its fifth annual Venice Fun Ride to benefit charities throughout South Sarasota County. At the end of the day, the ride raised $74,000.

People who came out for the fundraiser beamed with excitement as they crossed the finish line.

“We’re proud of that and it’s always good to do that with this community here,” Doug Andrews said. “Really good time. It was windy today, we go into the wind if it was cold in the morning, but we made it.

This is a major success for the club.

Organizers say when the race started they had 54 runners who together raised around $8,000. This year, 251 runners took part. Their efforts, along with the support of sponsors, marked the most successful fun run in the event’s history.

David Slaman, co-director of the Venice Fun Ride, said the ride has become the club’s biggest event each year. With this year’s event in the books, the ride has raised a total of $210,000.

All of this money is not going to just one charity, but to many.

The Venice Yacht Club Foundation works with 26 charities across Venice and southern Sarasota County. They primarily focus on addressing issues of homelessness, child literacy, veterans issues, and hunger.

Slaman said it’s important for people to do what they can to serve those less fortunate, and he hopes to see even more participants join in.

“It gives us a sense of civic pride that we’re helping the community and helping people who just need a helping hand,” he said.

Money raised from the hike will be distributed to charities over the next six to eight months.
